Canon-Fronsac is a wine-growing region located in the Southwest of France, within the Libournais area of the Bordeaux wine region. It is named after the two main communes of the region, Canon and Fronsac. The area has been known for wine production since Roman times.
Confined to a few slopes along the Dordogne River, the vineyards occupy a total area of about 300 hectares. The area is characterized by clay and limestone soils which are ideal for growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc grape varieties which are primarily used in the production of the wines.
The wines of Canon-Fronsac are typically red blends, which showcase a deep color, robust structure and a bouquet of red and black fruits, often with hints of spice and tobacco. They are less tannic than some other Bordeaux and are also known for their longevity and good aging potential. The classification of these wines falls under the Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) system of France.
Although Canon-Fronsac wines are not as well-known as those from the neighboring regions of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, they offer an excellent value alternative and are highly regarded by those in the know for their quality and consistency.
