Alsace Klevener de Heiligenstein is a unique and lesser-known wine produced in the Alsace region of France. This wine is made from the Savagnin Rose grape variety, which is not to be confused with the more common Savagnin grape used to produce vin jaune in the Jura wine region.
The cultivation of Savagnin Rose for Klevener de Heiligenstein has been restricted since 1971 to a small number of communes around Heiligenstein, including Bourgheim, Gertwiller, Goxwiller, and Obernai.
Typically, Alsace Klevener de Heiligenstein presents rich and aromatic spices with medium to full body on the palate. This wine is known for its exotic and complex flavor profile that often includes apple, pear, and tropical fruit, as well as floral and nutty characteristics. It can be off-dry to sweet with noticeable acidity.
Due to its rarity, Alsace Klevener de Heiligenstein often gets overlooked in favor of more famous Alsace varieties such as Riesling and Gewurztraminer. It is not officially recognized as an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, or AOC, instead falling under the Alsace AOC, but the term is permitted on labels as an acknowledgement of its regional significance.
Occasionally, you'll see this wine simply referred to as “Klevener” or “Klevner”, although these terms can also refer to different wines depending on the context. Despite its relative obscurity, Alsace Klevener de Heiligenstein is a distinctive wine that provides a unique expression of the Alsace terroir. Consequently, it is highly valued by wine enthusiasts and collectors who enjoy discovering wines that are off the beaten path.
