Cyprus is an island country situated in the Eastern Mediterranean, south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel and Palestine, north of Egypt, and southeast of Greece. It is the third largest and third most populated island in the Mediterranean.
The capital and largest city is Nicosia, which is located roughly at the centre of the island. The official languages are Greek and Turkish, although English is extensively spoken.
Cyprus is known for its rich history that stretches back more than 10,000 years. It has been under the rule of many empires including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans, and British, which is evident in its diverse architecture and culture.
Cyprus is known for its warm climate and beautiful beaches, which makes it a popular tourist destination. Its unique landscape ranges from the Troodos Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea, providing opportunities for various activities like hiking, bird watching and water sports.

The Republic of Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004, however, it is politically divided into two main parts; the Republic of Cyprus and the northern third of the island, administered by Turkish Cypriots. The division has been ongoing since 1974, and it is a major point of disagreement between Greek and Turkish nationals.
Despite its political complications, Cyprus is known for its friendly, welcoming population and it continues to attract tourists and expats from around the world.
