The Evxinograd is a Bulgarian royal summer residence situated a few miles north of Varna, which is the third largest city in Bulgaria. The palace’s name is derived from the Greek term "Euxinograd", which translates to "a good place to live".
The palace complex comprises of a stunning park that is a prevalent tourist attraction, a winery, which is among the country’s oldest, and several residential buildings.
The most prominent building features a blend of several architectural styles, including Neo-Gothic and typically French elements. The mastermind behind the design was a renowned Viennese architect who was personally chosen by the Bulgarian Knjaz (a Slavic title). The most distinctive features of the building are its beautiful ornate wooden ceilings, stunning stained glass windows, and marvellous murals.
The lavish park that surrounds the Evxinograd palace was carefully designed to be viewed from the main building’s terrace. It features more than 300 plant species from the Mediterranean, Japan, China, and South America, making it one of the oldest and most diverse parks in Bulgaria.
Perhaps the biggest star of Evxinograd is the winery that produces one of the country’s most famous wines, named after the palace itself. The winery was established in 1902 and quickly won the appreciation of wine aficionados. The grape varieties used to produce the Evxinograd wine are entirely grown in the palace’s own vineyards, which cover an area of around 123 acres.
