Harmanli is a town situated in the Haskovo Province of southern Bulgaria. It is located near the meeting point of the Maritsa and Arda rivers. Established initially as a fortress during the Roman era, the town has a rich history and has been under the rule of various empires, including the Ottoman Empire.
Covering an area of nearly 240 square kilometers, Harmanli has a diverse landscape that combines flatlands and hilly regions. Its climate is continental, characterized by hot summers and cold winters.
Despite being a small town, Harmanli has a decent infrastructure. It boasts several kindergartens, primary schools, high schools, and a vocational school of agriculture. The town also has a cultural centre, a library, an art gallery, and various sports facilities, which play host to several local tournaments.
The economy of Harmanli primarily consists of agriculture, with the production of crops like wheat, sunflower, and barley, and livestock rearing is also common. There are also some industry sectors, including food processing and furniture manufacturing.
One notable feature of Harmanli is its diverse population. While the majority are Bulgarians, there are also Romani, Turks, and others living in harmony.
The town is famous for every year hosting the International Folklore Festival, showcasing music, dance, and traditions from around the world. It also has archaeological sites and historical landmarks, such as the “St. George the Victorious” Church, and remains of the Roman fortress.
