Niederösterreich, also known as Lower Austria, is one of the nine states of Austria. It is the largest state in terms of land area, covering about 20% of the country’s total territory. It also has the second largest population, after the state of Vienna.
Niederösterreich is located in the northeast part of Austria, bordering the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It encloses Vienna, the capital city, but does not include it. Instead, it surrounds the city-state on all sides.
The geography of Niederösterreich varies dramatically. It ranges from the rolling hills and vineyards of the Weinviertel in the northeast, to the alpine terrain of the Mostviertel in the southwest. The Danube River, one of Europe’s major waterways, flows through the state and provides a key channel for transport and tourism.
Niederösterreich has a strong agricultural sector, known for its production of wine, fruits, vegetables, and grains. It also has a significant industrial sector, with industries ranging from construction to machinery production and chemical manufacturing.
The region boasts rich cultural heritage, with many castles, abbeys, and museums. St. Pölten, the capital of Niederösterreich since 1986, has a well-preserved old city with Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture. The Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a famous wine-growing region along the Danube and home to beautiful medieval towns and the renowned Melk Abbey.
