Lebanon, officially known as the Lebanese Republic, is a country located in the eastern Mediterranean. It is bordered by Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south, while Cyprus is to its west across the Mediterranean Sea. The capital and the largest city is Beirut. The country covers an area of approximately 10,452 square kilometers and has a diverse population of around 6.8 million people as of 2021.
Lebanon is known for its unique blend of different cultures, evident in its history, architecture, and cuisines. The country has 18 officially recognized religious sects, and this religious diversity influences its political system where power is shared among different religious communities. The official and most widely spoken language is Arabic, although English and French are also commonly spoken.
Despite its small size, Lebanon is characterized by diverse landscapes. It has a coastal plain along the Mediterranean, parallel to which are the Lebanon Mountains. The Bekaa Valley, known for wine cultivation, lies further inland, and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains mark the border with Syria.
Lebanon has a rich history, having been the home of the Phoenician civilization in ancient times. It fell under the rule of many empires, including Ottoman and French, before gaining independence in 1943. The country’s recent history is marked by a long civil war from 1975 to 1990, which resulted in economic and social challenges. Lebanon continues to grapple with political instability, economic woes, and a large number of Syrian refugees.
In terms of economy, Lebanon historically had a liberal economic regime and was considered the banking hub of the Middle East. However, currently, the country is facing a severe economic crisis. Tourism, agriculture, and commerce are significant sectors, but they’re all facing difficulties due to the current economic situation.
Lebanon has a rich cultural heritage, with four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its cuisine is renowned worldwide for dishes like hummus, tabbouleh, and falafel. Lebanon also has a vibrant arts scene, especially in literature, music, and film.
