Maharashtra is a state situated in the western peninsular region of India, and is the second-most populous state in the country. It is spread over an area of approximately 307,713 square kilometers and has a population of about 112 million.
Maharashtra is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Gujarat and the Union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli to the northwest, Madhya Pradesh to the north and northeast, Chhattisgarh to the east, Karnataka to the south, and Goa to the southwest. The state covers a significant portion of the Deccan plateau.
