Ningxia, officially known as the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is located in the northwestern part of China. Its capital and largest city is Yinchuan. The region covers an area of around 66,400 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 6.8 million people.
Ningxia is home to the Hui people, one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by China, who are predominantly Muslim. Their presence lends unique cultural and religious influences to the region, which can be seen in the architecture, food, and festivals observed.
The region is known for its landscapes, which include parts of the Gobi desert, the Liupan Mountains, and the Yellow River - the third longest river in Asia. It has a semi-arid climate with high temperatures in summer and cold winters.
Economically, Ningxia is one of China’s biggest producers of coal. It also has strong agricultural sector with the cultivation of crops like wolfberries, liquorices, and wine grapes. Ningxia's wine industry has been growing and its wines have gained international recognition in recent years.
The area also has historical significance, with the 108 Towers from the Western Xia Dynasty and the Haibao Pagoda standing as ancient landmarks. The annual 'Nadam Fair', showcasing traditional sports like wrestling and horse racing, is a highlight of the local culture and attracts many tourists.
