The Santiago Metropolitan Region, often simply referred to as Metropolitan Santiago, is one of Chile's 16 first-order administrative divisions. It is the country's only landlocked administrative region and contains the nation's capital, Santiago, which is also the largest city in Chile.
Covering an area of 15,403.2 square kilometers, Santiago Metropolitan is the third smallest region in Chile, but it is also the most populous with over 7 million people residing in it. That's almost half of the country's total population.
The region is known for its vibrant economy. Its primary economic activities include commerce, services, manufacturing, and finance, and it contributes to over 45 percent of the country's GDP. Santiago Metropolitan is home to numerous multinational corporations, industries, retail centers, and financial institutions.
Along with being an economic hub, the region is also a significant cultural, political, and educational center. It houses renowned universities, cultural venues, museums, and historical sites. As for geography, the terrain in the region is characterized by a broad central valley surrounded by the Andes mountains.
