The Columbia Valley is a large viticultural area located in Eastern Washington, USA. It stretches from the northern border of Oregon to the eastern side of the Cascade Range along the Snake and Columbia rivers. This region covers over 11 million acres and contains smaller wine regions such as Red Mountain, Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley, and Horse Heaven Hills.
The Columbia Valley is known for its diverse landscape and climatic conditions which result in an ideal environment for various kinds of grape growing. The region enjoys about 300 days of sunshine annually and the soil is rich in volcanic ash, silt and gravel giving the wines distinct flavors. This region primarily produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Riesling, and Chardonnay, among others.
Apart from viticulture, Columbia Valley is also popular for its striking natural beauty, outdoor recreational opportunities, and rich history.
This valley should not be confused with British Columbia’s Columbia Valley in Canada, which is also a known wine-producing region.
