The Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley is a designated American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in Washington state. It is part of the larger Columbia Valley AVA and is known for its unique, cool climate viticulture.
The Ancient Lakes area earned its name from the chain of over 50 lakes that dot the landscape. These lakes and surrounding coulees (steep-sided, dry valleys) were formed by massive catastrophic ice age floods which carved out the Columbia Basin of Central Washington about 12,000 to 15,000 years ago.
The AVA is recognized for its distinct microclimate that is cooler and windier than other parts of the Columbia Valley. This coolness is beneficial for crisp white wine grape varieties like Riesling, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as the red variety Pinot Noir. The area's basalt cliffs, natural minerals, and limestone rich soils also contribute to the complex profile and minerality of its wines.
The Ancient Lakes AVA is relatively new, receiving its official designation in 2012. It currently includes around 1,600 acres of planted vineyards. Some of the prominent wineries include Cave B Estate Winery and Jones of Washington.
