Lake Erie is the fourth largest lake of the five Great Lakes in North America, and the eleventh largest globally. It borders the states of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York in the U.S., as well as the province of Ontario in Canada.
Being the shallowest lake among the Great Lakes, it within Ohio's borders contains various islands and a notable coastline that features multiple beaches, state parks, marinas, and cities, including Toledo and Cleveland. Its southern shore in Ohio is often referred to as "Ohio's Lake Erie Shore" or "Ohio's North Coast".
The lake is a major asset for Ohio, supporting a multi-million-dollar fishing industry, including walleye and yellow perch. Additionally, its waters are vital for agriculture, drinking water, and industrial uses.
Lake Erie is also prominent for sailing and recreational boating, with many yacht clubs and marinas established around the lake. Every year, it attracts numerous tourists who enjoy various activities like boating, fishing, swimming, bird-watching, etc.
However, Lake Erie has also faced environmental challenges including pollution and harmful algal blooms, leading to efforts by government agencies and environmental organizations to protect and maintain its health.
The Lake Erie Ecosystem Priority, a campaign launched by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, aims to monitor, regulate and prevent toxic substances and protect the lake's upon aquatic ecosystem. Additionally, it also targets to manage invasive species and restore wetlands and other habitats for fish and wildlife in Lake Erie.
