Isle St. George is located in Ohio, USA, on Lake Erie. Better known as North Bass Island, it is the northernmost of the Bass Islands and one of several that belong to Ottawa County.
This small island only covers an area of 675 acres and as per the 2010 census, it had a population of just 13 people. However, its history is rich with the culture of the early settlers, predominantly of European descent, who took advantage of the fertile soils to establish vineyards and wineries.
Today, Isle St. George is renowned for its viticulture, since the 1860s, producing wine commercially. The entire island is covered by vineyards, operated by Firelands Winery. It also produces varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Pinot Noir.
Despite its relative isolation, Isle St. George is accessible via airports located on the other islands, Middle Bass Island and Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island. It has also a State Park for visitors.
Often untouched by tourism, the island provides a tranquil getaway. Its general isolation lends a unique tranquillity, and its simple beauty has its own draw. It's an under-radar destination for adventure-seeking tourists who relish offbeat destinations and a haven for wine lovers.
