Catoctin is a region in the eastern United States that covers parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It is home to several parks and natural attractions, including Catoctin Mountain Park, Cunningham Falls State Park, and the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo.
Catoctin Mountain Park, managed by the National Park Service, is known for its camping, picnicking, and scenic overlooks. There are around 25 miles of hiking trails through the park, which offer opportunities to spot local wildlife and visit the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace. Camp David, the presidential retreat, is also located within this park.
Cunningham Falls State Park contains Maryland's highest cascading waterfall, in addition to campsites, swimming areas, and hiking trails. It's a popular spot for outdoor family adventures.
The Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo is home to over 600 exotic animals and offers safari trail rides through a 35-acre woodland pasture.
The area is also known for its dense hardwood forest and rich local history, as it has been populated for hundreds of years and saw activity during the Civil War and Industrial Revolution.
