El Dorado is a legendary city or kingdom, reputedly located somewhere in the unexplored interior of South America. The legend originates from the Muisca, a pre-colonial civilization of modern-day Colombia. The tale tells of a chieftain who was covered in gold dust and would wash it off in a sacred lake, throwing in gold and precious jewels as an offering to the gods. This led the Spaniards to translate the term El Dorado as "The Golden One".
Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, European explorers went on numerous expeditions to find this mythical land of gold and wealth but all in vain. They never found El Dorado, but they did discover the river Amazon and the Andes mountains during the process. Today, El Dorado is viewed as a myth, symbolizing the unattainable dream of utopian wealth.
In the modern context, El Dorado often refers to any place where wealth can be rapidly acquired. It has been used in literature, music, film, and other media. For example, Edgar Allan Poe's poem "El Dorado" uses the legend to illustrate man's quest for happiness. El Dorado is also a symbol in Steven Spielberg's film "The Road to El Dorado" and a recurring theme in many other popular culture references.
