The Shenandoah Valley in California is one of the state's premier wine producing regions, separated from the larger Central Valley by the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Famous for its Zinfandel, the valley has been home to vineyards and wineries since the Gold Rush era of the 1850s.
Located in the northern part of Amador County, the valley is considered part of the Sierra Foothills American Viticultural Area. The area is known for its hot climate and well-drained soils, making it ideal for growing grapes. The warm days and cool nights help grapes maintain their acidity, producing balanced and flavorful wines.
Visitors to the Shenandoah Valley can enjoy tasting a wide variety of wines, including Barbera, Syrah, and Viognier besides Zinfandel. The valley is home to over 20 wineries, many of which are family-run establishments and offer tastings and tours.
The California Shenandoah Valley is not to be confused with Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Beyond wineries, the California valley also offers beautiful landscapes, quaint B&Bs, and a slower-paced lifestyle, reflecting its rich history and agricultural roots.
