It is named after the Spanish word for skulls, Calaveras, as the remains of many Native Americans were found upon initial exploration of the county.
The county is known for its agriculture, winemaking and nature tourism. It is also famous for being the setting of Mark Twain's "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Every year, the county organizes the Jumping Frog Jubilee, based on Twain’s story, which attracts tourists from all over the world.
