Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak is a viticultural region, or wine-growing region, located in northern California. The region covers the upper elevations of the Mayacamas Mountains in both Sonoma and Mendocino Counties.
This region is specifically known for its high-quality red wine grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The vineyards here are planted at elevations between 1,600 and 3,000 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest altitude vineyard areas in California.
The climate at Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak is unique due to its high elevation and clear skies. The region experiences more sunlight and thus, more consistent temperatures than other lower lying vineyard areas, resulting in a longer growing season. This allows the grapes to develop full, complex flavors while retaining acidity.
The volcanic and rocky soils of the region add to the unique characteristics of the wines produced here which are known for their intensity and varietal expression.
Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak was officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 2011. The AVA status is given to specified grape-growing regions in the U.S. which have distinct geographical features, climate, soil, and other conditions that affect the type and quality of the wine it produces.
