Stags Leap District is a renowned wine-producing region in the Napa Valley of California. It was officially designated as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1989. The district is famous for producing some of the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines due to its unique terroir characterized by a cool climate and volcanic soils.
The region covers approximately 2,700 acres, with about 1,200 acres planted in vineyards. It got its name from a Native American legend about a stag leaping to escape hunters across the district's palisades. This part of Napa is known for its unique topography where the vineyards nestle at the base of the Stags Leap palisades, giving rise to very distinctive wines.
Stags Leap District gained international recognition in 1976 at the historic Judgment of Paris, where Stags Leap Wine Cellars won first place in the red category.
The wineries in this region are celebrated for their innovation, sustainability, and dedication to maintaining the distinct characteristics of Stags Leap District wine. The combination of strict quality control measures and exceptional terroir ensures high-quality wines that are in high demand globally.
