Los Carneros, often referred to simply as Carneros, is a wine grape-growing region located in the southern parts of both Sonoma and Napa Counties in California, United States. The region is known for its cool climate due to its proximity to the San Pablo Bay, part of the larger San Francisco Bay, which results in a longer growing season compared to other wine regions in California.
Los Carneros is recognized for its production of high-quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines. The region's weather, combined with its clay soil, makes it ideal for these types of grapes.
The region was officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983, the first California wine region to be defined by its climate characteristics rather than political boundaries.
In addition to vineyards, the Los Carneros region features rolling hills and scenic vistas, making it a popular destination for wine tourism. Despite its proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area, the region maintains a rural atmosphere with many family-owned wineries.
