Howell Mountain is located in Northeast Napa Valley, California, USA, and is known for its viticulture. It was established as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983 and is famous for producing some of the best and most unique wines in the world. The conditions of Howell Mountain – its rocky, well-drained soil, slightly cooler temperatures, and higher elevation compared to other regions in Napa Valley – contribute to the production of intense, bold wines, typically Cabernet Sauvignon.
Although vineyards were first planted in the mid-19th century, the region saw a revival of viticulture in the later part of the 20th century. The wines here are known for their great structure, complexity and ability to age. Some of the well-known wineries in Howell Mountain are Duckhorn Vineyards, Cakebread Cellars, La Jota Vineyard Co., and Black Sears.
Just as notable as its vineyards, Howell Mountain itself is a beautiful place with stunning landscapes, making it a popular destination for wine tourism. Despite its fame, the area maintains an “off the beaten path” feel.
