Calistoga is a small city located in Napa Valley, California, known for its hot springs, mud baths, wineries, and beautiful scenery. It rests at the northernmost tip of the valley, which adds an extra charm to its tranquil rural setting.
Calistoga was founded in the 1860s by Samuel Brannan, a wealthy entrepreneur who aimed to create a spa resort destination comparable to Saratoga Springs in New York. The city’s name, in fact, was reportedly created in a tipsy mix-up at a dinner party wherein Brannan intended to say "the Saratoga of California" but instead announced he would make it "the Calistoga of Sarifornia".
The city caters to leisure and relaxation with its various spas and resorts that offer treatments like hot stone massages and mud baths. A popular spot is the Old Faithful Geyser, one of three geysers in the world with the designation "old faithful." These geysers are famous for their predictable eruptions, and this specific one in Calistoga erupts every 15 to 30 minutes, shooting hot water up to 75 feet in the air.
The city of Calistoga is also surrounded by numerous vineyards and is famed as a wine-producing region, part of the Napa Valley AVA. Wineries like the Chateau Montelena and the Castello di Amorosa are popular attractions, where visitors can tour the vineyards and taste different varieties of wine.
Residents and visitors also enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking in the Bothe-Napa Valley State Park or taking a bicycle tour through the vineyards. To catch a bird’s eye view of the stunning landscapes, hot air balloon rides are available as well.
With its combination of resort-town elegance, rejuvenating spas, wine-tasting tours, and outdoor activities, Calistoga offers a tranquil and luxurious retreat for both residents and tourists.
