Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak is a designated American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in Northern Sonoma County, California. It is positioned high above the Alexander and Knights Valleys in the Mayacamas mountain range. The AVA is known for its high elevation vineyards and cool climate, which is ideal for growing high-quality wine grapes.
This region is noted for growing particularly distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. The mountain peak reaches a height of approximately 3,000 feet, making it one of the highest wine regions in California. This altitude provides a unique environment where the grapes experience intense sunlight during the daytime but cool temperatures at night which helps to balance the acidity and ripeness of the grapes.
The Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak AVA was established in 2011. It covers a total area of 4,600 acres, out of which approximately 230 acres are planted with vineyards. The wines produced here are known for their complex flavors and high concentration due to the nature of the rugged, volcanic soils and the influence of the climatic conditions.
The vineyards in this region are primarily family or independently owned, applying sustainable farming practices to create high-quality wines while ensuring the preservation and health of the unique mountain ecosystem.
