Cole Ranch is an appellation in Mendocino County, California, USA. But what makes Cole Ranch distinctive is that it is the smallest recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the country, covering only 60 acres. Established in 1983, it is completely enclosed by the larger Mendocino AVA.
The vineyards in Cole Ranch are planted with Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir grape varieties. The altitude of the vineyards varies from approximately 1,400-1,600 feet, resulting in a cooler, more continental climate compared to other parts of Mendocino.
The ranch was sold in a landmark deal in 2019, considered the first-ever sale of an entire appellation. It was purchased by vintners at Wilson Artisan Wines. The rarity of the AVA and its unique characteristics make Cole Ranch noteworthy in the wine-growing scene in the United States.
