Solano County is located in the vibrant and diverse San Francisco Bay Area, in the northern part of California, U.S.A. The county covers an area of approximately 909 square miles and as of 2020, has an estimated population of approximately 453,491 according to the United States Census Bureau.
Solano County was established in 1850 and its county seat is Fairfield. It is named after Chief Solano of the Suisun people, a Native American tribe of the region.
The county's geography is diverse, ranging from farmland and rolling hills to waterways and urban areas, including a portion of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. It is home to six cities: Benicia, Dixon, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun City, and Vacaville, and portions of Vallejo.
Solano County offers a blend of urban, suburban and rural lifestyles with a balance of industrial, commercial, residential and agricultural areas. It hosts the Travis Air Force Base, one of the largest employers in the region.
The county is known for its beautiful natural scenery and is home to the Solano Land Trust, which works to conserve open space and agricultural land. There are plenty of cultural and recreational opportunities, like visiting the Jelly Belly Candy Company and Anheuser-Busch Brewery, beautiful Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, farmers markets and Solano Community College.
It is well-connected by several major highways and is also served by Amtrak, the national rail system, as well as Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) services. The county is a significant employment, education and shopping destination, especially as it is located between Sacramento, the state capital, and San Francisco.
