Ballard Canyon is a relatively small but vibrant wine-growing region located in Santa Barbara County, California. The area is set amidst the rolling coastal hills, lying halfway between the Santa Rita Hills appellation to the West and the Happy Canyon appellation to the East.
This region is especially known for producing high-quality Syrah and other Rhône varietals due to its unique and favorable climate characteristics. The cool marine layer that rolls in from the Pacific Ocean provides a longer growing season, allowing for the development of a rich flavor profile in the grapes.
However, Ballard Canyon is not limited to Rhône varietals. It also produces superb Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, and other varietals that benefit from its warm afternoons and cool evenings.
The region consists of around 600 acres of vines, with vineyards dispersed throughout the canyon, each providing a distinct appeal given their microclimates, soil compositions, and the variety of grapes grown.
Ballard Canyon was designated an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 2013, recognising the outstanding and distinctive wines produced in the area. It has a combination of sandy and clay loam soils, and despite being a relatively small wine region, its reputation for high-quality wines continues to grow. Today, Ballard Canyon has become a must-visit for any wine enthusiast visiting the Santa Barbara County.
