Lime Kiln Valley is a small American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in San Benito County, California. This is one of the smallest appellations in the U.S., covering just about 2000 acres of land. The region is named after the historic lime kiln in the valley, which was used in the late 19th and early 20th century to produce lime used in construction.
It has a unique combination of soil, climate and topography which makes it ideal for growing distinct varieties of grapes. The area is particularly known for growing Hauer White, a rare grape variety that is virtually only grown in Lime Kiln Valley.
The region's climate is heavily influenced by the Pacific Ocean, leading to mild and consistent temperatures throughout the growing season. The soil in the region is also rich in minerals due to its location near the San Andreas fault. Lime Kiln Valley AVA has a well-drained, rocky terroir which is favorable for the production of high quality wine.
The valley is home to few wineries that produce unique and exquisite wines which have garnered recognition nationwide. Although a small appellation, the Lime Kiln Valley is recognized as a distinctive wine growing region within California offering unique variety of wines.
