Contra Costa County is located in the state of California in the United States. The county seat and largest city is Martinez. As of the 2020 census, the population was approximately 1.15 million. The county covers about 804 square miles, of which a significant portion is water.
The name Contra Costa means "opposite coast" in Spanish, referring to its position on the other side of the bay from San Francisco. The county is included in the San Francisco Bay Area and has a very diverse economic base, encompassing everything from small family-owned businesses to large corporations.
