Montérégie is a region in the southwestern part of the province of Quebec in Canada. It is named after the Monteregian Hills, which is derived from the same root as the province's name, meaning "where the nation resides". It is the second most populous region in Quebec, after Montreal, with a population of over 1.5 million people as of 2016.
Covering an area of about 11,200 square kilometers, Montérégie is bordered by the St. Lawrence river to the north, the US state of New York to the south, the region of Estrie to the east and the city of Montreal and the region of Lanaudière to the west.
The region is known for its diverse economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, services and tourism. Montérégie is also known for its rich history and heritage. There are several national parks, historical sites and cultural attractions in the region, making it a popular tourist destination.
Apples and cider production are synonymous with the region, courtesy of its favorable agricultural conditions. Additionally, Montérégie is home to several educational institutions, including campuses of the Université de Sherbrooke and the Université de Montréal. The region is divided into 14 Regional County Municipalities and offers diverse urban and rural living environments.
