The Niagara Peninsula is located in Southern Ontario, Canada, between the southern shore of Lake Ontario and the northern shore of Lake Erie, separating it from New York State, USA. It is renowned for its scenic beauty and is the main producer of Ontario wines.
The Niagara Peninsula is best known for the city of Niagara Falls, famous for its stunning waterfalls, which draw millions of tourists each year. It is also home to the Welland Canal, part of the Saint Lawrence Seaway system that connects the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean.
In terms of climate, the Niagara Peninsula enjoys a moderate microclimate, with the region around the towns of St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake being warmer than the rest of Canada, apart from southwestern British Columbia. That's why it's also known as the "fruit basket of Ontario" with vineyards, orchards and farms abundantly spread.
Aside from wine and fruit production, the area also has a significant tourism sector thanks to its natural beauty, historical sites, and various festivals. Niagara-on-the-Lake, in particular, is a historic town with well-preserved Victorian architecture, a thriving theatre scene and a bustling main street with a range of shops and restaurants.
Additionally, the Niagara Escarpment, which cuts across the peninsula, has been designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, thanks to its unique and wide range of plant and animal species. The Bruce Trail, Canada's oldest and longest footpath, runs along the escarpment, offering stunning views and hiking opportunities.
In terms of population, the peninsula has over 400,000 residents and includes major cities such as St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, and Welland. The region has diverse cultural heritage, rich in history from the War of 1812 and the Underground Railroad. It also has a strong footprint of Indigenous peoples such as the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe.
