Newfoundland and Labrador is a province on the eastern coast of Canada. It is the most easterly part of North America, and consists of the island of Newfoundland and mainland Labrador on the mainland to the northwest, with a combined area of 405,212 square kilometres.
The province is characterized by its vast, rugged landscapes, including a wild northern coastline, diverse forests, soaring mountains, and deep fjords. It also has numerous national parks and historic sites, celebrating the region’s rich cultural history, particularly its indigenous and European heritage. The capital city is St. John's, which is located on the island of Newfoundland, notable for its colorful row houses and vibrant arts scene.
Newfoundland and Labrador has a population of roughly half a million people. The residents are known for their friendliness and hospitality. English is the primary language spoken in this province, but the unique local dialect is infused with Irish, English and French influences.
The provincial economy is typically tied to natural resources such as oil and gas extraction, mining, and fisheries. However, tourism is also an important industry, with visitors drawn by the province’s natural beauty, wildlife (including large seabird colonies and migratory whale populations), and cultural offerings, such as folk music and culinary traditions.
Climate in Newfoundland and Labrador can be quite varied, with cold winters, especially in Labrador, and mild to warm summers. The province also boasts a unique geological history, and is home to L'Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring a Viking settlement dating back around 1,000 years. The province also includes the ancient landscapes of Gros Morne National Park, another UNESCO World Heritage site that draws many tourists each year.
