The town was originally known as Pampoenkraal and served as a watering station for early explorers. In 1825, it was renamed Durbanville in honor of then governor of the Cape, Sir Benjamin D'Urban. Durbanville holds a distinction of being part of the Cape Town's Northern Suburbs.
