Tinta Roriz is a red wine grape varietal predominantly found in Portugal and also in Spain (where it is known as Tempranillo). It is known for its robust and full-bodied wines, that often have flavors of red fruits, berries, plums, and sometimes tobacco or leather.
The Tinta Roriz produces dark colored wines with strong tannins and high alcohol content. They tend to be balanced in acidity and often show aging potential.
The grape also plays a significant role in the blends used for ports, and its deep color and high tannin content contribute to the longevity of the wine.
When vinified on its own, Tinta Roriz can yield a vigorous, full-bodied and complex wine with an ability to age and develop graciously in the bottle. Its flavor profile typically includes notes of wild berries, cherry, plum, and black currant, often with spice accents and hints of balsamic, cocoa, and cedar.
Despite its importance in Port, this grape is versatile and has been used to produce a variety of still wine styles ranging from light and fresh to heavy and full bodied.
