The St. Croix grape is a cold-hardy grape varietal primarily grown in the Northern United States and Canada. It is a hybrid breed, a cross between two other varietals: the Seibel and the ES 283. This resistant grape is mainly used for making red wine.
The wine from St. Croix is typically medium-bodied with high acidity, bringing refreshing flavors with it. It offers complex notes of black cherry, blackberry, and other dark fruits along with hints of black pepper and other spices. Some versions tend to be quite aromatic, adding depth to both their flavor profiles and their overall appeal.
Aside from being used in single varietal wines, the St. Croix grape is also blended with other varieties to complement and enhance their flavors. It's a great grape for home growers due to it being disease-resistant and able to withstand colder climates. Hence, the St. Croix varietal is a favorite among growers in many North American regions.
