The Porto Grapes varietal is not a standalone grape, but the term is usually referred to the varieties of grapes that are grown in the Douro Valley of Portugal, intended for making Port wine. These varieties include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (known as Tempranillo in Spain), Tinta Barroca and Tinta Cão. Each variety gives unique characteristics to the Port wine. For instance, Touriga Nacional is considered the finest, adding structure and body to the wine, while Tinta Roriz provides the wine's fruitiness. These grapes are typically grown on steep, terraced vineyards and the grapes often undergo foot-treading in large, shallow tanks for extraction prior to fermentation.
