The Norton varietal is a type of grape that is native to North America and primarily grown in the central regions of the United States, notably in Missouri. Named after Dr. Daniel Norton who first cultivated the grape, it is known for producing full-bodied, rich red wines. Norton wines are often characterized by their deep, dark color and strong flavors, typically exhibiting notes of red fruit and spiciness.
They can also age well, developing more complex flavors over time. This varietal is resistant to many diseases that affect other grape varieties, making it a hearty and reliable choice for vineyards in its native region. It is also known as Cynthiana in some regions. In fact, Norton is considered the oldest native grape in the United States that is still used for winemaking.
