Nero d'Avola is a dark-skinned red grape varietal primarily grown in the southern Italian region of Sicily. It is one of Sicily's most important and widely planted varietals.
The wines produced from Nero d'Avola grapes tend to have robust body and high tannins, with flavors of black cherry, plum, blackberry, and prunes. Secondary flavors may include licorice, chocolate and peppery spice.
Nero d'Avola wines are often compared to New World Shirazes for their sweet tannins and plum or peppery flavors. It can be made into a variety of styles: from bright, light, and crisp wines that are served chilled, to more structured, rich, and age-worthy wines.
The grape is also frequently used in blends, contributing color intensity and alcohol content. It is sometimes blended with other Sicilian grapes like Frappato in the Cerasuolo di Vittoria.
