Gamaret is a red wine grape varietal that is predominantly grown in Switzerland, though it can also be found in certain regions of France. It was created in the 1970s by crossbreeding the Gamay and Reichensteiner varieties.
Gamaret produces wines that are highly colored, full-bodied, and rich in tannins. The wines usually display exquisite notes of fruit, particularly black fruits like blackcurrant and blackberry, along with earthy and spicy undertones. Despite Gamaret's intense color and tannin, the wines are typically easy to drink with a fine balance of acidity.
Given its high resistance to fungal diseases, it is quite a popular variety among vine growers. Gamaret is increasingly used to produce single varietal wines but is often also blended with Garanoir or other red varieties to lend them greater complexity and structure.
