Colorino is a dark-skinned grape variety popularly grown in the Tuscan region of Italy from where it originated. It is traditionally utilized in the classic Chianti blend to provide a deep color, and lately, winemakers have begun to appreciate it for its rich aromatic characteristics.
Cultivating Colorino can be complex due to its irregular behavior during spring and early flowering. The bunches it produces are compact and cylindrical in shape, and its berries are small and dark blue.
The wines made from this varietal are known for their dark fruit flavors and notes of spice. They usually contain moderate tannins and high acidity, making them good for aging. Their bold colors contribute to their namesake, 'Colorino', which means 'little dyer'.
