The Santa Lucia Highlands is a wine growing area in Monterey County, within the Central Coast of California. This region is one of the prominent viticulture areas in California and is recognized worldwide for its exceptional quality of Pinot noir and Chardonnay.
The climate of the Santa Lucia Highlands is heavily influenced by the cool coastal fog from the adjacent Monterey Bay, as well as the strong and consistent winds from the Salinas Valley. This unique combination of weather conditions leads to a longer growing season, which allows the grapes to develop robust and complex flavors.
The area is named after the Santa Lucia mountain range where the vineyards are nested. On these mountain terraces, vineyards are planted on slopes of up to 1,200 feet above sea level. The high elevation, greater sun exposure, and well-drained soil improve the maturity and complexity of the fruit.
Santa Lucia Highlands has about 6,400 acres of vineyards, with a total representation of about fifty wine brands. This appellation (wine region) was officially recognized in 1991 and since then, it has gained a reputation for producing some of the best cool climate wines in California.
In addition to its acclaim for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Santa Lucia Highlands also produces remarkable Syrah and other Rhône varietals. Overall, wine enthusiasts appreciate wines from this region for their intensity, rich flavor, and balanced acidity.
