Pinotage is a red wine grape that is South Africa's signature variety. It was created in 1925 as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut grapes. The varietal is known for its deep, robust flavors which can range from smoky, bramble fruit, plum and sometimes banana to earthy and a touch rustic notes. It often has hints of tropical fruit, sometimes even banana. Pinotage wines are high in tannins and are often aged in oak to enhance their flavor. Despite being sometimes compared to Shiraz or Dark Cab, Pinotage has a unique flavor profile that makes it distinguishable. The quality and flavor profile can vary greatly and depends largely on the winemaking process. The more quality Pinotage tend to be bold and full-bodied with a dark red hue.
