Dolcetto is a black grape varietal that originates from Italy, specifically the Piedmont region. This grape produces deeply colored red wines that are often light to medium-bodied. Dolcetto wines are known for their fresh, fruity flavors that can include plum, blackberry, cherry, and licorice, also blended with more bitter or savory notes such as almonds and herbs. Typically, they are low in acidity and high in tannins. These wines are usually intended to be consumed young, within three years of their vintage year. The most famous Dolcetto wines come from the Dolcetto d’Alba and Dolcetto di Dogliani zones. Despite its Italian origins, the Dolcetto grape is also grown in other wine-producing regions around the world including California and Australia.
